ASH Names Editor-in-Chief of New Journal: Blood Global Hematology

Dr. Jorge Cortes will lead new journal focused on global hematology research
(WASHINGTON, April 16, 2024) — The ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ (ASH) has selected Jorge Cortes, MD, to serve as the inaugural editor-in-chief of the newest addition to the Blood journals portfolio: . He was selected after a competitive international search.Blood Global Hematology will be a peer-reviewed, open access journal focusing on the publication of high-quality original articles describing basic laboratory, translational, and clinical investigations in hematology research that address issues of global reach or with a global focus. The journal will also publish local adaptations of clinical guidelines, epidemiology and public health analyses, opinion articles, and prospective studies evaluating locally available treatments for blood disorders. The journal will have a particular focus on providing a new avenue for researchers who may have resource constraints or face health care delivery challenges.
“The scope and scale of hematology research all over the world has grown over the years, and we’re delighted to welcome Blood Global Hematology into the Blood journal family,” said Mohandas Narla, DSc, president of ASH and distinguished scientist at New York Blood Center Enterprises. “As a global society, we are thrilled to launch this new journal that will publish research with broad implications not just for low- and middle-income countries, but for hematologic research all over the world.”
Jorge Cortes, MD, director of the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University, will serve as the editor-in-chief of Blood Global Hematology, and will establish an international editorial board with representation from low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Cortes previously served as professor of medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is chairman of the International Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Foundation, president of the Latin American Leukemia Net, and member of the International Steering Committee of the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology. He has been an associate editor for Blood and an active reviewer for other hematology journals.
“I’ve worked extensively with patients, clinicians, and investigators from all over the world, and I know firsthand the scale of global research,” said Dr. Cortes. “Blood Global Hematology will be a home for research done anywhere in the world and a voice for the global hematologic research community. Our aim will be for this journal to improve science and patient care worldwide.”
To support authors from low- and middle-income countries, there will be no submission fees.
Blood Global Hematology will open for submissions in fall 2024. The first articles will be published online in early 2025 and continuously thereafter. For more information about the journals, please visit the .
