Committee Mandate

The Committee on Training seeks to foster high-quality training programs in clinical and research hematology for pre- and post-doctoral trainees, provides career and educational opportunities for hematology trainees in a variety of settings, offers support and guidance for training program directors and educators, and serves as the ASH liaison with other organizations involved in aspects of hematology training.

The Committee on Training participates in developing guidelines regarding hematology training program content, levels and kinds of exposure to clinical and laboratory problems, and mastery of required procedures. The committee offers career development, mentorship, and didactic educational opportunities for hematology trainees in areas such as grantsmanship. Regarding issues that relate to hematology training, the committee is the primary liaison with organizations such as the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ (ACGME), the Association of Subspecialty Professors (ASP), and the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO).

The structure of the Committee on Training allows the chair to oversee all aspects of its mandate while providing other committee members with leadership opportunities. In accordance with ASH committee policies, subcommittees are composed of members of the committee as well as other ASH members in good standing (i.e., dues paid). The committee provides representation and advocacy for training program directors and hematology program development. The co-chairs of the Test Materials Development Group (hematology in-service examination development group) serve as ex officio members of the Committee on Training and report as necessary and/or appropriate on any issues regarding the exam. The liaison from the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine (RRC-IM) also serves as an ex officio member of the Committee on Training. A member of the Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion serves as a liaison member of the Committee on Training.

The work of the Committee on Training is divided into six primary areas of responsibility:

1.    Medical ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½: Ensure a voice and presence for hematology in undergraduate (medical school) and graduate (residency, fellowship) medical education, including creating educational tools and influencing policy.

Medical ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Subcommittee – This subcommittee focuses on ACGME issues and is responsible for hematology course director outreach and the hematology in-service exam; it also has oversight of the ASH Teaching Cases, the ASH Medical Educators Institute, and the Hematology Review Series. The chair serves as a liaison member of the Committee on Training.

Teaching Cases Working Group – This working group supervises the development and revision of Teaching Cases and their presentation in an interactive online format. The chair serves as a liaison member of the Medical ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Subcommittee.

ASH MEI Working Group – This working group oversees the ASH Medical Educators Institute. The chair serves as a liaison member of the Medical ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Subcommittee.

Hematology Review Series Task Force – This task force oversees the Hematology Review Series. The chair serves as a liaison member of the Medical ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Subcommittee.

2.    Mentorship: Oversee the Trainee Council and Hematology Mentorship Oversight Working Group.

Trainee Council – This subgroup is under the purview of the Committee on Training; the chair serves as a liaison member of the Committee on Training.

Hematology Mentorship Oversight Working Group – This working group develops ASH strategic priorities in mentorship and regularly assesses gaps to be addressed.

3.    Research Training: Oversee the Clinical Research Training Institute.

CRTI Steering Subcommittee – This subcommittee provides guidance for the Clinical Research Training Institute (CRTI) in its current structure; the Chair serves as a liaison member of the Committee on Training.

4.    Awards: Administer and evaluate the ASH training awards portfolio.

Training Awards Subcommittee – This subcommittee provides oversight for the following ASH training-related awards and the study section process for each: Research Training Award for Fellows (RTAF), Hematology Opportunities for the Next Generation (HONORS) Award, Graduate Hematology Award, and Medical Student Physician-Scientist (Phy-Sci) Award. The chair serves as a liaison member of the Awards Committee and the Committee on Training.

5.    Program Directors: Provide representation and advocacy for training program directors and hematology program development.

6.    Outreach: Develop, secure approval for, and implement strategies and tactics to educate medical students, graduate students, and residents about hematology and careers in the subspecialty as well as about ASH and ways to become involved in the society.

ASH Ambassador Oversight Subcommittee – This subcommittee develops strategies, resources, and opportunities for ASH appointed ambassadors to recruit for careers in hematology. The chair serves as a liaison member of the Committee on Training.

Hematology-Focused Fellowship Steering Subcommittee – This subcommittee oversees the progress of ASH Hematology-Focused Fellowship Training Program fellowship tracks. The chair serves as a liaison member of the Committee on Training.

Members of the Committee on Training are required to attend two one-day meetings per year at ASH Headquarters, usually in April and October.

The chair of the Committee on Training serves as a liaison member of the Program Committee and Trainee Council and is expected to attend the meetings of those groups.

Members of the Committee on Training serve as liaison members of the Committee on Communications; Committee on Quality; Task Force on PhD Careers in Hematology; and Trainee Council and are expected to attend the meetings of those committees. A member also serves on the CME Accreditation Committee and is expected to attend the meetings of that committee.
